The first year of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings saw it undergo a significant evolution, transforming an already excellent and mature RPG into a highly polished gem. Instead, it has as much to do with when you played The Witcher 2 as how you played it. This variation can leave one player scratching their head in befuddlement when they hear of the events that befell another, but it's not due to anyone misremembering quest details, game features or the story's closing sequence. The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition is one of the best RPGs for the Xbox 360 and despite being a title that has been out for over a year (for PCs) could make waves when critics name their Game of the Year later in 2012.It's befitting of a game that features an amnesiac protagonist that the recounts of its players can vary wildly from one person to the next. Yes, there are some issues regarding graphics and controls, but they are easily overlooked when you consider the many positives that The Witcher 2 brings to the table.

The game’s story introduces many characters, kingdoms and events that play out over five separate portions (Prologue, Chapters 1-3 and Epilogue). As you progress through the story, there will be several key points where your decision drastically alters the game’s events as well as the ending (really, we’re not talking about an ME3 issue here). The game’s story follows Geralt as he hunts down an assassin who has targeted the rulers of the Northern Kingdoms. The real star of The Witcher 2 is the game’s storyline, which features multiple paths and a graphic, mature storyline. Players have the option of making Geralt a more adept swordsman, alchemist or spell caster, with each tree offering unique upgrades and enhancements that will have a distinct effect on how the player goes through the game. Players will be forced to complete the training grid at the game’s outset, giving you a basic set of skills before you decide to focus on one of the game’s three main skill trees.
The Witcher 2 also allows for gamers to craft their own version of the game’s protagonist, Geralt of Rivia, the original title’s protagonist, via an intricate grid system. While most enemies and battles will require a diverse array of these weapons, exactly how well you prepare for battle and how strategically you implement their use is at your disposal. There are standard light and heavy melee attacks, spell casting (Witcher signs), ranged weapons, enhancements and the ability to lay traps. Combat is also as simple or difficult as you want it to be.

The tutorial at the beginning of the game not only allows for you to figure out how to fight and utilize all of the tools at Geralt’s disposal, but it also suggests a level of combat difficulty that will allow the game’s story to progress at a fair pace. The Witcher 2 is one of the most accessible RPGs on the Xbox 360 in terms of difficulty. The Witcher 2 is the best RPG experience on the Xbox 360 so far in 2012 (considering that Mass Effect 3 is more of an Action RPG/Third-Person Shooter hybrid). The reason I wanted to discuss the minor flaws of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition at the outset is because getting them out of the way early allows for me to discuss just how phenomenal this game really is. The tutorial when the game opens serves as a solid introduction to get players accustomed to the many different buttons/functions of items that can be assigned to them. Again, this is a minor issue and is to be expected when porting from PC to consoles.
The other issue you will notice at first is that the controls for pulling up menus and quick access bars are a bit awkward on an Xbox 360 controller that does not have the hot-key ability that a keyboard has. The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition is still an impressive title graphically it’s just not as polished as its PC counter-part.
The processing power of the 360 is simply not as strong as most of the top-end PCs that gamers use. While The Witcher 2 is one of the most graphically stunning games on the PC, there is a slight drop-off in terms of graphics with the Xbox 360 version.
